Dragons in Heart

Dragons in Heart

13 December 2015

dragon loyalty.png

I was nominated for the dragon loyalty award. While I don’t usually follow up on awards in general, I was inclined to do it for this one because of the person who nominated me, Tosha Michelle, a wonderful writer and musician who writes artfully and with a lot of insight, passion and beauty in what she expresses. If you do not know her writing or her songs, please do check her out at http://laliterati.com/

She also has many other aspects to her that I will let you discover from her blog.

The rules are 1) Display the award on your blog. 2) Announce your nomination with a post and link the blogger who nominated you 3) Present 6 deserving bloggers with the award (see below) 4) Link your awardees in the post 5) Write 7 interesting facts about you

So here I go with the facts (I had to remove the OCD part because the person nominating me already got there before I did  and also because it has become thankfully almost non existent in my life now)

  1. I was a hyperactive kid with a very high IQ but with absolutely no sense of being social so I liked to be a lot by myself. Thankfully through the years of growing up my IQ went down and what is now called my EQ went up so I became more sociable
  2. When I was a child, I used to spend most of my time day-dreaming and gazing at the stars because I was convinced that my home was up there and that I was not meant to be here on Earth. I still have a big attraction for the skies but the sense of longing, unbearable nostalgia and wanting to go away immediately has thankfully reduced over the years.
  3. I was called “swallow the moon” (“gobe la lune” in French) because you could make me believe just about anything when I was a child and an adolescent. I never failed to believe that people were telling the truth no matter how far-fetched what they said seemed, which earned me my first nickname
  4. I was extremely lazy and barely studied but always scored the highest marks and consistently was the first in class except for the last year of my school (graduation year to my parents’ and school teachers’ utter dismay) when I went through a rebel phase and decided that I was not going to study at all but just go to the beach almost all the time  because I was fed up of being first and wanted to be just like everyone else for a change. I actually wanted that since a while but that was the first year I got the courage to disobey.
  5. My latest nickname which has stuck with me since my young adult age – first uttered by a boyfriend long gone now (may he RIP) – is Blue. You can consider that I have a very very long Blue period unlike Picasso because I have not yet changed my nickname to anything else. I feel good being Blue
  6. I love playing 3 to 5 minutes chess games called blitz on a website called freechess.org and sometimes can get totally engrossed by this to the point that I can forget to eat until night falls when I am alone (when my kids are away). Thankfully my children are with me except for school holidays so that keeps me on track for eating most of the time.
  7. I wanted to be an artist and had always loved drawing and sketching but am self-taught as I was not able to take art courses (directed by my parents when I was younger and then hogged up by life’s constraints later). To console myself for not being able to follow art orientation instead of sciences at school I used to draw on my pants and paint them much to my mother’s dismay and the anger of my school teachers as it was back in the 80s and having painted jeans was not fashionable yet. I still like to draw and paint though on canvas since a while and find it very comforting and a good way of expressing myself.

Moving on to the awardees, I would like to nominate the following people (I would have loved to include Tosha and Eric but the first nominated me and the second was already nominated by the first). I have to say there are so many more who should be nominated in general because their work is so beautiful and interesting but as this list has to be limited to 6 I stopped it at that figure choosing those who made me somehow think of the characteristics of a dragon as I see the creature.

  1. Deborah aka dancingpalmtrees (http://dancingpalmtrees.com/) a fine human being and writer who has a very fiery spirit and does not hesitate to speak her mind. Aside from being an amazingly insightful and sensitive writer, she is also a much needed support and beacon of light for her brother Stephen who is a grown man suffering from autism. Her current battle is to ensure that siblings get the same rights as parents in terms of days of leave to take care of a family member in need.
  2. Thomas aka FT Ledrew (https://hooklineandinkwell.wordpress.com/) an amazing writer and Senryu master aside from his photography and baking skils. He introduced me to many art forms (alas by inference and not by direct contact) through the beautiful poetry he wrote in those art forms. I always look forward to reading his poetry.
  3. Annie aka pixieannie (http://ponderingsofapixie.com/) a very creative lady who amazes me not just with her outreach into the world of poetry, photography and drawing but also with her capacity to cut down trees, use tools that in my limited upbringing I thought only men could master. We can safely say she is my Heroin because she is capable of doing so many things I could only dream of doing
  4. Dajena aka moonskittles – her name is pronounced like Diana – (https://moonskittles.wordpress.com/) a witty and very talented writer who multiplies herself between her family/worldly life and a beautiful blog which she populates with creative output in the form of poems, beautiful photography or sometimes recounts whether fiction or stories about things that actually happened in her daily life
  5. Paul aka Paully (https://paully1965.wordpress.com/) a writer with an extreme sensitivity and a very generous heart who writes beautiful poetry
  6. Tony Single (http://crumblecult.com/) whom I “discovered” not so long ago and who is an amazing cartoonist (I am a fan of the strange crumble world now), poet, keen observer of human nature and who also likes and expresses himself through photography. All of these talents are showcased in different sites that you can discover when you visit his crumblecult site.

She looked at his face, a picture of an angel. His hands against the teddy bear she had put next to him. It always made her catch her breath when she saw him so serene and peaceful in his sleep.

He was almost always such a naughty boy when he was awake and she had to scold him often, too often perhaps.

She kneeled down and grazed his cheek with her lips. It did not feel quite right. She stared at him. Something welled inside her as her friends propped her up.

She looked down at him, the teddy bear almost his size squeezed into the carving out of the pine tree she had chosen. She thought it should have been her, more white hairs on her head and many more wrinkles to her face lying in a larger sized coffin with him a young man looking down at her, happy she had lived such a full life though sad to let her go.

It was not meant to be this way. Her throat was still parched, all throughout her an aching fire moved but the tears would not come, not yet.

Tomorrow or someday, sometime it will rain but today there was only the fire and the desolation

A Beautiful Lie

A Beautiful Lie

Sally liked to eat spinach. She liked it so much that she had it cooked in various types of dishes and toured the world in search of new recipes to try out – not really of course but in her head, silly, or she would probably be eating something else than just spinach.

Sally was lonely. How could it be anything else? If her parents had named her Chappy perhaps she would have been happy or if her parents had made her a boy, perhaps her life would be filled with Joy but no, they had made her a girl and named her Sally predestining her to be lonely. Come to think of it, had she been a boy and had they named her Vlad, she might have been sad. Then again she might also have been glad or mad, which she was most certainly boy and Vlad or not.

Now enough of all that emotional nonsense and back to some fitting and filling food like spinach for instance. As I said, Sally liked to eat spinach and you might even say she was obsessed by spinach to the highest degree. If she were a King – or a Queen for that matter, she had again lost her head would have said the hatter, forgetting that she was a girl after all – she would make sure to issue a decree that spinach be eaten by all and that it be served throughout the kingdom for free.

Sally had no kingdom though or at least none that others could see. Her friend the hatter saw it of course but that did not count any more than the crown on her head did because none could see hatter either. So Sally the lonely – hatter excepted – Queen with a kingdom that none could see sat at her table eating spinach. Of the finest sort it was, the spinach – at least hatter and her were both of the same opinion.

  • Two is a company you know hatter she said.
  • Well of course dearest queen and best spinach eater of all my friends
  • Am I your bestest friend hatter?
  • You’re my bestest best friend ever.
  • Do I look like a beautiful queen?
  • You are the fairest queen ever in this kingdom. Cross my heart with a piece of silver if I lie to you; please my Lady. Times are tough

Sally looked up at hatter but it was not he really who had said that nonsense. He was not used to saying such nonsense you know. Anybody who knew him would tell you that. It was a man standing in front of her table his face looking like it could really do with some spinach to put some colour back into the pale of it which spread everywhere except the tip of his nose that was bright red.

  • Would you like some spinach, she volunteered
  • No ma’am
  • But I am sure you will feel much better
  • I am sure you will feel better eatin’ that spinach an’ all yerself ma’am and I’d hate to spoilt it for ya
  • Oh well, I guess you’re right but I don’t have any silver for you, just perhaps a pound or two but tell me what will you do if I give one of them to you?
  • I should buy me some food ma’am
  • That sounds reasonable but I still don’t understand why you don’t just eat it right here and now as this spinach is really a treat

The man with the face shuffled and kept quiet eyeing her purse so Sally took one pound out and gave it to him feeling like Florence Nightingale handing out some life-saving medicine. She held back and smiled a wide smile at him

  • Do I look like a beautiful Queen?
  • The most beautiful queen ever ma’am
  • Am I your best friend now?
  • You’re my best friend ever ma’am

She gave him the pound the large smile still on her lips and as she gazed at him disappearing, she caught a glimpse of herself in the rear-view mirror of a car. A big chunk of spinach was stuck in the middle of her teeth colouring her smile and her hair looked like she had just wrestled with a wildcat. She looked up searching for the clown-faced man and found him entering the pub across the street, an arm raised already ordering his daily dose or so it seemed. So much for honesty she thought. She checked her reflection again and smiled a green smile. It was still a Beautiful Lie.

A Beautiful Lie – 30 seconds to Mars

This post is part of the FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES Prompt Challenge #5

Ping back and rules here

The idea is to write a short story using as title the title of a song you like. For me it was A Beautiful Lie

Please feel free to comment. This is my first attempt at short fiction and I have difficulty writing concisely in prose although I have made progress in writing short in poetry thanks to the Japanese forms of tanka, haiku and senryu. I am aware I am still a stretch from actual flash fiction 😀

Many a suitor would come as knight

With most shining armour but with teeth yellow in light

Our woman raised princess would look, say

I like ye outer shell but ye rotting inner nay!

All the knights one by one were only faced with dismay

Plan they concocted for her to sway

The mightiest dragon for their princess they would slay

Poppies red in field

Danced to the wake of sunlight

Before stillness hit

Like an earthquake hearts burst out

From withered poppies that shrank

<3

Crimson hearts pulsate

In their naked agony

Frail and bodiless

Slender frame responds shaking

As the hearts begin to beat

<3

The throbbing hummed on

Beating to the rhythm of red

Cast on sea of hearts

Ocean in heart responded

While I picked them one by one

<3

Feathers gathered pink

To gushing crimson fountain

Soft they had been once

Mellow in healing touch

Hands extended I faltered

<3

Sewn across bodies

Shells picking up a new life

Hearts reached out in vain

Tight writhing chest echoed dull

As my arms withdrew sullen

<3

All I had was ink

Dark matter spilled on my hands

As I waved goodbye

My mind walked on free yet tied

To a bottomless low tide

Surviving Dreamtime

Dark Matter’s ink diluted

Heart weightless renewed
